About Horizons Foundation

Location:

155 Sansome Street, Suite 650, San Francisco, CA 94104, US

Mission Statement

A community foundation rooted in and dedicated to the LGBTQ community, Horizons exists to mobilize and increase resources for the LGBTQ movement and organizations that secure the rights, meet the needs, and celebrate the lives of LGBTQ people; empower individual donors and promote giving as an integral part of a healthy community; and steward a permanently endowed fund through which donors can make legacy gifts to ensure our community's capacity to meet the future needs of LGBTQ people.

Description

Our programs help build strong, sustainable organizations that have the resources to advocate for, serve, and celebrate the lives of LGBTQ people. We encourage LGBTQ people to give generously to LGBTQ causes and nonprofit organizations. At the heart of our mission lies our work to meet today's needs of our LGBTQ community.

Horizons Foundation has grown from making two grants of $500 each in 1980 to a total of more than $44 million in the almost four decades that have followed. Reading through Horizons Foundation's history of grantmaking is very much like a reading a shorthand history of the LGBTQ community, and the foundation's grants track the community's needs and priorities.

In 2018, we awarded more than $5.1 million in grants to a wide array of nonprofits that advocate for and serve our community day in and day out. Simultaneously, donor commitments to making legacy gifts to the foundation also rose, reaching more than $95 million in future gifts that will benefit LGBTQ people for decades and decades ahead. Horizons made nearly 1,000 grants to nonprofits in 2018, including over 560 grants within the nine county San Francisco Bay Area.

The LGBTQ movement's gains are not necessarily safe. That recognition drives Horizons' passionate and continuing commitments to creating the financial resources that future generations will need for whatever challenges they face -- and whatever opportunities they have.
