Mountain Lion Camera Trapping Volunteer

The Zion National Park Wildlife Program is seeking a full-time volunteer to manage an on-going mountain lion camera trapping project. This project was initiated in March 2024 and is the preliminary work that will lead up to a full-scale mountain lion study which is anticipated to start in spring 2025. Duties will be a combination of field and office work. Field work will require hiking long distances (10+ mile/day) in difficult terrain (steep, off-trail, bushwacking, scrambling) in extreme weather (hot, cold, rain/snow).
The earliest potential start date for this position would be September 16, 2024 , and the latest possible start date would be October 14, 2024 .

Major Duties:
- Maintaining and routinely checking/downloading deployed game cameras
- Surveying lion habitat to look for lion sign (tracks, latrines, scrapes, etc.)
- Deploying game cameras at lion sites
- Processing game camera photos using game camera processing software
- Naming and filing photos using an established protocol
- Assisting wildlife biologist with deer and bighorn sheep necropsies
Knowledge and Skills Required:
- Ability to comfortably and safely hike and navigate off trail alone in remote backcountry locations in rough and extreme conditions.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to self-regulate work schedule to ensure duties are accomplished on time.
- Ability to work a minimum of 32 hours/week (required to receive housing ).
- Valid U.S. driver's license (required to drive government vehicles ).
- Ability to clear a federal background check (required to use government computers ).
Reimbursements
$23/day worked (no reimbursements for days off ).
Housing
Free park housing will be provided. The volunteer may be living in shared housing with an NPS employee or another volunteer. The volunteer will have their own bedroom but share bathroom, kitchen, and living space. The volunteer must work for 32 hours/week to receive free housing.
Uniform
National Park Service/Zion National Park Volunteers-in-Parks uniform shirts, hats, and seasonal outerwear will be available. The volunteer will be responsible for providing all other clothing items such as field-appropriate pants and footwear.
