Our hands-on classroom is opening in August and we need volunteers to support our local teens and young adults with mild intellectual disabilities by providing a supportive, yet challenging community based vocational training program.
Skills of Life Cafe offers a 90 day job training internship program. We have created a curriculum that places training emphasis on the skills of safe handling and use of appliances to make hot and cold beverages, light serving, bussing, and customer interface skills. In addition we will be offering training and support to the "hidden skills" that are known as the soft skills of behavior awareness, time management, organizational skills, working as a team, and how to flow with task rate of speed given the changing of customer flow.
We all want to feel connected and participate in activities that bring us pleasure, and build our self-esteem and abilities. Having a meaningful job gives a feeling of community and personal contribution, while broadening opportunities and purposeful experiences.
Volunteers are expected to commit to leading 2 classes every month and to complete a background check.
Volunteers are required to attend training sessions prior to volunteering.
All trainings take place at our trailer in Live Oak.
If you want to volunteer, please use the "Express Interest" Button to connect with the volunteer coordinator, or use the "emial" icon to email Molly directly.
