LaAmistad Mission

To support Latino students and their families by providing a comprehensive support system through tutoring, mentoring, and resources that promotes academic, physical, and personal growth.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the ESL Director, responsibilities include:

  • · Be properly prepared for every lesson.
  • · Commit to a 10 week semester, one session a week.
  • · Plan and execute a lesson plan based on ESL curriculum.
  • · Note student attendance for each class.
  • · Communicate weekly with the other teacher if co-teaching.

Qualifications

All prospective volunteers must submit an online application form and successfully complete a background check screening. In addition, all volunteers must:

  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Be a native or fluent English speaker.
  • Be willing to attend training sessions.
  • Have regular access to email.
  • Have a desire to work with adults from different cultural, educational and economic backgrounds.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to work with adult students of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds, abilities, and skills. Possess good interpersonal and organizational skills. Possess characteristics of responsibility, desire to help others, discretion, and flexibility. Ability to work independently applying critical thinking skills and problem solving to various situations.

Description

LaAmistad is a volunteer driven nonprofit organization that empowers Latino students with the knowledge and skills needed to reach their dreams. We provide after school tutoring, reading and math enrichment, preschool education, one on one tutoring opportunities, summer camp, mentoring, and sports programs students in Grades K-12.

LaAmistad also hosts the largest community-based adult English as a Second Language program in Georgia, parenting workshops, and serves as a resource center complete with information on employment, health, counseling, legal and financial services, and scholarship information. Our unique library contains books, computers with internet, and resource center are available for use by all of our students and families.
