Interested in military history? Engage with visitors at the historic Battery Townsley as an Interpretation volunteer! Battery Townsley is a renovated coastal defense gun battery than helped protect the San Francisco Bay during World War II from an enemy naval attack. Volunteers at Battery Townsley welcome visitors to the site, lead interpretive tours and talks around the battery, and help protect our park’s natural and cultural resources. Be a part of the living history of Battery Townsley while enjoying coastal views, meeting people from all over the world, and supporting your local National Park site!
Responsibilities Include:
- Work at a busy park site helping answer visitor questions about the park, the history of Battery Townsley, and helping swear in Junior Rangers.
- Lead guided tours/talks of the battery which last about 45 minutes and engage the public.
- Work with park staff and other volunteers to support the mission of the National Park Service.
- Record visitor contacts and program attendance numbers.
Volunteer Requirements:
- Personal vehicle/transportation to Battery Townsley
- Ability to comfortably stand for long periods of time while engaging with the public.
- Battery Townsley is only open to the public on the 1st Sunday of every month from 12:00-4:00 PM. Preferred time commitment at least 1 day per month for the 4 hour shift.
Skills Needed/Preferred:
- Enjoy working with a diverse public
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public and with park staff.
- Knowledge of local area and resources
- Willingness and eagerness to try and learn new things/skills
- Bilingual (preferred)
