Interested in military history? Help visitors at one of the country’s only restored Nike Missile
Sites. During the Cold War, the Nike Missile Site here in the Marin Headlands was one of many
sites acting as the United States’s last line of defense against a nuclear attack from the Soviet
Union. Help visitors engage and connect with this troubling time in history as an Interpretation
volunteer! Volunteers lead tours of the site, facilitate discussions around the military history of
our park, and help protect our park’s natural and cultural resources. Be a part of this site’s
important history!
Responsibilities Include:
- Work at a busy park site helping answer visitor questions about the park, the history of the Nike Missile Site, and helping swear in Junior Rangers.
- Lead guided tours/talks of the site which last about 45 minutes to 1 hour and engage the public.
- Work with park staff and other volunteers to support the mission of the National Park Service.
- Record visitor contacts and program attendance numbers.
Volunteer Requirements:
- Personal vehicle/transportation to the Nike Missile Site.
- Ability to comfortably stand for long periods of time while engaging with the public.
- The Nike Missile Site is open to the public on Thursdays, Fridays, & Saturdays from 12:00 - 3:00 PM. Preferred time commitment at least 1 day per month for a 3 hour shift.
Skills Needed/Preferred:
- Enjoy working with a diverse public
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public and with park staff.
- Knowledge of local area and resources
- Willingness and eagerness to try and learn new things/skills
- Bilingual (preferred)
