ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Volunteers will help thousands of visitors discover and enjoy Acadia National Park as they become an integral part of the Visitor Experience and Education team. Volunteers will assist with the opening and set-up of the Carroll Homestead site. While at the site, the volunteers provide orientation and interpretation of the Carroll Homestead as well as provide general information about the park. The volunteer will be monitoring artifacts and props in the Homestead while it is open for operation and assist with closing the facility down when needed. In addition, volunteers will assist with set up, managing, and take down of Jr Ranger Stations for park visitors. While managing these stations, the volunteer will run activities with visitors, process Jr Ranger books and help swear in new Jr Rangers. In addition, the volunteer will be able to provide orientation, and basic interpretation of the park and its resources to park visitors. Lastly, the volunteer will also be involved with a newly developed program for the park called the Junior Angler program. Volunteers will assist with the setup, managing, and take down of Junior Angler Stations throughout the park. There may be other duties as assigned. Potential housing is available. * Applications will be reviewed in September and applicants can expect to hear back by early October.


Major Duties

·Assist with the opening, closing, garden maintenance and living history programming at the historic Carroll Homestead.

·Assist with the setup, managing and take down of Junior Ranger stations at various locations in the park.

·Assist with the setup, managing and take down of the Junior Angler station at various locations in the park.

·Roving throughout the park at highly visited locations in the park to provide visitor information, education, and interpretation.


Requirements

·Must volunteer at least 32 hours/week to maintain housing.

·Must possess a valid driver’s license.

·Customer service oriented and possess a friendly, helpful, and professional demeanor with all visitors and co-workers.

·Capable of dealing with stressful situations in a professional manner.

·Ability to work independently and follow procedures.

·Properly wear the Volunteer-In-Parks (VIP) uniform while on official duty.

Knowledge and Skills Required

·Basic knowledge of park resources and services.

·Ability to effectively communicate with visitors, park staff, and others.

·Desire to assist people and especially youth.


Physical Demands

Moderate physical effort is required for this position. There will be some hauling of equipment and props to different duty locations. Extended periods standing or sitting, and some minor gardening required.


Work Environment

Most of the work done is outdoors at popularly visited locations in the park. The volunteer will be exposed to the elements, and uneven terrain of some of the work locations.
