My Own Book

My Own Book Fund brings children from under-served New York City public schools to bookstores and lets each child pick out $60 worth of books to start his/her own home library. Volunteers, working in pairs or groups, are matched with a school, meet with the educators and children who will be participating, accompany each class on its shopping trip to the bookstore, then follow up with another school visit to hear all about what the children have been reading.

The time commitment for working with one school amounts to roughly six weekday mornings over a two month period.

About MY OWN BOOK FUND INC

Location:

545 W. 111th St., NEW YORK, NY 10025, US

Mission Statement

Our mission is simple and urgent: to foster the love of reading and joy of book ownership among New York City’s poorest children. It begins with a simple invitation: "Come with us on a class shopping trip to an exciting book store, browse through the wonderful selection of children’s books, and My Own Book will give you $60 to buy books and start your own library at home."

Description

My Own Book Fund began with one man wanting to do something meaningful in his retirement. Looking to share his love of reading, he contacted a school and asked if he could take their 3rd graders to a bookstore and let each child pick out books to start their own home library. Primarily through word of mouth, this one man, one school operation grew into a non-profit that serves over 40 schools throughout the five boroughs. We have more schools asking to join the program than we can handle with our current volunteer base and so are expanding our search efforts. It is the perfect opportunity for those who love kids, love reading and can spare roughly three hours a day for six days over a two month period.
