Denali National Park GIS Data Manager (Uncrewed Aircraft Systems) - Alaska

Summary

Denali National Park and Preserve hosts one of the most robust Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) programs in the National Park Service and play a large role in the Department of the Interior UAS operations in the state of Alaska. Data collected with UAS sensors plays a large role in managing natural and cultural resources throughout the state of Alaska, but many questions regarding the regulations and best practices exist for all UAS operators who wish to utilize UAS for research in Denali.

Volunteers will assist with outreach, education, and collaboration for Denali’s UAS program. Volunteer may also assist with remote sensing projects captures with UAS sensors.

One example of a final product created by the volunteer includes designing an ArcGIS Online (AGOL) Hub Site for sharing information about uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) within the Alaska Region. The audience for the content includes federal, state, local agencies and tribal entities, as well as commercial, recreational, and research-oriented UAS operators. Information will be hosted on the State of Alaska Geospatial Council's AGOL site. Content will include maps, news posts, event posts, contact lists, and sharing of reports.

Tasks/Duties

· Solicit information from partner agencies to convey to public;

· Design interactive, accessible, 508-compliant public content for websites;

· Publish and host web feature services through ArcGIS Online with complete metadata using standard naming conventions;

· Design web maps and apps in ArcGIS Online;

· Assist with Remote Sensing data processing;

· Assist with preparing UAS platforms for missions and projects.

Duty Station / Living Accommodation Information

  • All work will be remote and work is solely in the office, but volunteers will have the option to join for field work with UAS if able;
  • Volunteer will provide their own laptop;
  • Work schedule is a minimum of 15 hours/week;
  • Start and end dates are negotiable.

Skills and Requirements :

  • Intermediate to advanced GIS skills are required, whether acquired through experience or education.
    • Intermediate skills are defined as: understanding projections and datums; editing vector feature class geometry and attributes; building query expressions; symbolizing and labeling features; and the ability to run spatial analysis density tools to create raster datasets.
    • Advanced skills are defined as: the ability to manipulate time/date data as string or date fields in attribute tables, feature class properties, with map toolbars and geoprocessing tools as intervals and durations; experience with publishing feature and map services to an online Arc Server; customizing pop-up windows using Arcade or HTML; knowledge of relationship classes, domains, and database attachments; understanding of 3D data analysis with geoprocessing tools and visualization through ArcScene/ArcGlobe; or experience publishing map and feature services to a server.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Volunteer in this position must be age 18 or older.

In addition, the ideal candidate will have an interest in UAS policy, applications, systems, and sensors.
