ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

The Blue Ridge Parkway needs 6-8 volunteers for a trail maintenance project on the Grassy Gap Fire Road Trail located at Milepost 243.7 near Doughton Park. The Grassy Gap Fire Road Trail is 6.5 miles long and is rated as a moderate hike by the National Park Service.

This project will be a joint effort by the National Park Service maintenance crew and the volunteer team. The major duties of this trail maintenance project will be string trimming and brushing the entire length of the trail in addition to providing support to the NPS maintenance crew's efforts. Due to the strenuous nature of this project, the volunteers who take part must be in good physical condition.

This project will take place on National Public Lands Day, Saturday September 28th, 2024 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

The Blue Ridge Parkway will host an online information session about this project on Thursday September 19th at 4:00 pm. The presentation will discuss details of the project including the scope of the project, a description of duties that the volunteers will be asked to perform, training needs and logistics. The volunteers will have an opportunity to ask the National Park Service Volunteer Supervisor any questions that they may have about the project during this information session.
