The Student Heroes Mission is to combat food insecurity by empowering high school students to lead and organize volunteer efforts at the Houston Food Bank. Through in-person and virtual service, students will develop leadership skills while helping food-insecure communities. The program fosters compassionate leaders who understand the challenges of hunger and are dedicated to creating sustainable solutions.

Mentor Position Description

  • Serving with student heroes in the project areas: Community Resource Center, Kitchen, Warehouse, Offsite Opportunities
  • Providing SH leadership team with feedback about student behavior or questions
    • Students who are not actively participating or playing around in the project area
    • Students may ask questions about the program or projects
  • Being available to answer questions or provide advice on life after high school (College, Trade Schools, Workforce, etc)
  • Attending a minimum of one shift per week during the evening (6-9 shift), Saturday (8-12/1-4) or Sunday (9-12) (All day Saturday is preferred)
  • May ask for Mentors to come during the week if school is not in session
  • Attending SH personal development/leadership workshops and orientations (Dates will be sent 2-3 months in advance)
  • Helping to verify hours and attendance at the end of the shift

Shift Expectations

  • Arrive 30 minutes early to each production shift
  • Help students check in at the computer and on the clipboard in the Dedicated Volunteer Hub
  • Communicate with VS Production supervisor via walkie-talkie to assign students to project areas
  • Remain with students in the Hub until a supervisor comes to retrieve them
  • Walk around project areas during the shift to ensure students are in the right place
  • Learn the projects to help answer student questions
  • Ensure that students safely make it off the property


Shift Frequency

  • Monday through Friday 5:30pm-9:00pm
  • Saturday from 7:30am to 12:00pm
  • Saturday from 12:45pm to 5:00pm
  • Sunday from 8:30 to 12:00pm

Onboarding :

  • Attend an interest meeting second and forth Tuesday of every month.
  • Volunteer in production at the Houston Food Bank 3x to familiarize yourself with our projects.
  • Attend a training saturday held on the first saturday of each month.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

BEFORE ATTENDING THE SHIFT

Students must respond to the shift opportunity listed on Galaxy Digital 12 hours before the shift start time to attend a shift and receive hours.
Contact the Membership chair to secure name tag and t-shirt.
Check GroupMe for a list of production schedules published on Friday for the weekend. For Spring Session 2024, production schedules will not be posted during the week.

UPON ARRIVAL FOR THE SHIFT

Arrive at 7:15 for the first shift, 12:15 for the second shift, or 5:15 for the third shift
The latest you may arrive is 7:30. If you are running plate, please contact the team via GroupMe.
Clock In on the computer and sign in on the clipboard in the Dedicated Volunteer Hub (DVH). For Spring Session 2024, failure to clock in on both the electronic and paper systems will result in an automatic denial to approve your hours.
Wait in the DVH until a VS Supervisor assigns you to a project.

DURING SHIFT

Serve in the volunteer area as directed by the Volunteer Service Associate leading the project.
You are expected to participate in the project as volunteers are directed (completing first or second sort, assembly line work, making boxes, rack room, etc.). Only by the request of the volunteer services associate will you be asked to participate as a leader of side jobs or project explanations.
Remain in your project area unless reassigned by a Volunteer Services Supervisor.

AT THE END OF THE SHIFT

Assist in all shut down procedures as directed by the Volunteer Services Associate facilitating the project. You are not released until your room is fully shut down and prepared for the next shift.
Let the Volunteer Services Associate you are working with know when you are leaving a project for a break or leaving the premises for the day.
