Furnace Creek Visitor Center:

The Furnace Creek Visitor Center is located on the valley floor in the Furnace Creek area of Death Valley National Park. Furnace Creek is considered the main hub of the park, due to its proximity to popular viewpoints, hiking locations, and amenities. The visitor center is a great place for visitors to start their Death Valley trip. Visitors can pay for their entrance fee or purchase a national park pass here, obtain maps and information, purchase souvenirs, and can explore the park museum. There is an auditorium that plays the park film on a 30-minute loop. Volunteers are expected to greet visitors, provide general park information, and answer phone calls and email inquiries. Roving opportunities to different locations around Death Valley are also provided to volunteers.


Visitor Center Volunteers are expected to wear the National Park Service Volunteer-in-Parks uniform which is provided by the park. This position directly supports daily operations of the park, including interpretation and resource management objectives. Volunteers can expect to interact with a diversity of park visitors, including school age children, non-English speaking visitors, and senior citizens. Volunteers will be expected to support the National Park Service mission and maintain a professional and friendly demeanor when interacting with the public. A valid Driver's License is required for driving government vehicles. A federal background investigation and security clearance is required for operating DOI/NPS computers and network. Length of Commitment

A minimum of 2 months (unless otherwise specified), which includes at least 1 week of training. Volunteers must be prepared to commit to a full-time work schedule. "Full time" is defined as a 32-40-hour work week on a regular schedule with two to three days off per week. Volunteers may be required to work weekends and holidays.


Training:

Volunteer training is provided by Death Valley interpretive staff. There is also a park library at the volunteer's disposal for independent learning about the park. Free online trainings are also available on the Pro Valens Learning website: ( www.provalenslearning.com )


Compensation:

Housing may be available, but not guaranteed, and is at no cost to the volunteer. Depending on availability, the volunteer may be housed in a dorm room or shared house and can expect to have housemates. Training covering both technical subject matter and communication skills. Development of work experience and skills in the field of interpretation. Enjoyment of sharing the wonders and resources of Death Valley National Park with visitors. Weekends allow for visits to High Eastern Sierra Mountains, LA, Las Vegas, and other surrounding areas. Volunteers who work an excess of 250 hours earn a free Volunteer "America the Beautiful" pass.
