Public Health Professionals are invited to join our community health programs to improve the health and wellbeing of the most vulnerable.

Volunteer Position: Public Health Professional

Term: 6-12 Months

Locations: International Positions are available in: Haiti, Peru, Kenya, Zambia, South Sudan, and New York City

Program Description:

CMMB - Healthier Lives Worldwide is an international, faith-based NGO providing long-term, co-operative, medical and development aid to communities affected by poverty and unequal access to healthcare. Focusing on women’s and children health, our Children and Mothers Partnerships program (CHAMPS) provides effective support-and life-saving medical care-for pregnant women and newborns in eight communities across Haiti, Kenya, Peru, South Sudan, and Zambia. With a commitment to dignity and sustainability, we work at both the community and clinical levels in these targeted communities to strengthen health services and address the leading causes of maternal and child death.

CMMB’s Volunteer Program addresses the critical need for professionals in areas that lack sufficient resources for quality preventive and curative health services. For over a century, our Volunteer Program has placed thousands of practitioners around the world to help develop and implement community health interventions, work at local hospitals and health facilities, conduct clinical training for host country counterparts, and deliver essential medicines and supplies. The ultimate goal of CMMB's Volunteer Program is to support our country teams and local healthcare workers by sending volunteers that are dedicated to strengthening local health systems and supporting a pattern of sustainable development.

Position Description:

CMMB is seeking professionals, 21 years and older, who can serve for a minimum of 6 months in the following public health volunteer positions:

  • Public Health Generalists serve in CMMB's country offices and CHAMPs sites providing support to our country directors and programs team through a range of programmatic support activities. They receive exposure to a broad base of global health and community development programs and are able to put their knowledge and skills to work in a field office setting.

  • MNCH, WASH, HIV, E-Health, Malaria Experts contribute their expertise in support of CMMB programs around the world; designing, implementing, and evaluating diverse initiatives in collaboration with CMMB Country Directors, partners and National Ministries of Health.

  • Nutritionists are needed in Peru and Zambia to support ongoing programs related to child development and health education.

  • Health Administrators provide critical support as we engage with clinical partners to improve human resources for health and facility operations.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Implement initiatives to educate the community about health topics and resources
  • Under direction, liaise with stakeholders from implementing partners, agencies, and organizations to coordinate project activities
  • Help ensure multi-sectoral and multi-level approaches to increase involvement and participation of all potential stakeholders
  • Conduct research and document evidence-based approaches for projects
  • Develop communication and program documentation materials for the projects
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of project trainings for healthcare workers and community mobilizers
  • Participate in project site visits, project-related trainings and events
  • Work with Financial and Administration team to develop of program budgets
  • Collaborate with health specialists and civic groups to determine community health needs and co-develop need-based goals
  • Distribute health education materials, including reports, bulletins and visual aids; maintain health education libraries to provide resources for staff and community members

Qualifications & Skill Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years of age or over
  • Master’s degree in Public Health
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience (internship and volunteer experience accepted)
  • Ability to work and live with a diverse group of professionals
  • Familiarity and interest in global health issues, especially maternal and child health issues
  • Familiarity and interest in public and community health, or preventative medicine
  • Willingness to endure resource-limited working conditions and evening/weekend hours
  • Problem-solver, able to identify needs and develop solutions
  • Experience working with or knowledge of USG-supported cooperating agencies such as USAID and CDC, and international counterpart organizations
  • SPSS/Stata or other M&E software experience
  • Experience as a supervisor, manager, teacher, trainer and/or any relevant leadership activities preferred
  • International experience or experience working in developing countries is preferred
  • Community Health Worker Certifications preferred
  • Spanish fluency required for all positions in Peru
  • Basic French or Kreyol required for all positions in Haiti
