We are looking for a motivated, talented volunteer to join RGI as a member of the AI/LM Innovation team. The Prompt Engineer will be responsible for creating, testing, and refining prompts used by LLMs to accurately map medical records to HPO terms. This role requires a deep understanding of natural language processing (NLP), strong analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams. The successful candidate will work closely with AI/ML specialists, bioinformatics scientists, and clinical data specialists to ensure the effectiveness of the prompts in improving the performance of our AI models.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and optimize prompts to enhance the accuracy of LLMs in mapping medical records to HPO terms.

  • Conduct experiments to test and refine prompts, using quantitative and qualitative metrics to assess performance.

  • Collaborate with AI/ML specialists to integrate optimized prompts into the LLM training and deployment process.

  • Analyze model outputs and feedback to identify areas for prompt improvement.

  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in NLP and LLMs, and apply these insights to improve prompt design.

  • Document prompt development methodologies, experiments, and results to ensure reproducibility and transparency.

  • Communicate findings and progress to stakeholders, including non-technical team members.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, or a related field.

  • Proven experience in natural language processing and prompt engineering.

  • Strong understanding of LLMs (e.g., GPT, BERT) and their applications in NLP tasks.

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and experience with NLP libraries (e.g., Hugging Face Transformers).

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to design and conduct experiments.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the healthcare or genomics industry.

  • Familiarity with bioinformatics and medical terminologies.

  • Publications or contributions to the field of NLP or LLM research.

Mission Statement

At RG, we are more than just an organization. We are a community dedicated to helping rare disease patients find hope for a cure. We work alongside patients and their families, providing them with the necessary tools, knowledge, and connections so that they can better understand the cause of their disease. We believe that every patient deserves more out of life.

Description

Rare Genomics Institute (RGI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping rare disease
patients find a diagnosis, treatment, and pathway to a cure. Through personalized research
projects, RGI provides access to world leading medical institutions and scientists to conduct
genomic sequencing, coordinates with clinicians and counselors to interpret findings, and offers an
online crowd-funding platform to deliver financial solutions. RGI also supports rare disease
advocacy by fostering an online community of rare disease patients and supporting rare disease
research through a yearly grant competition.

Since being founded in 2011, RGI has completed over 300 genetic sequencing and analysis
projects, assisted patients fund over $3.5 million worth of genomic sequencing, discovered 8
unique genetic mutations in-house, given over $2 million dollars in grants to researchers on rare
disease, and developed an online community with over 10,000 rare disease members.
Through volunteers, RGI is able to slowly push science and health care forward to meet the needs
of patients affected by rare diseases. To learn more about RGI check out our website, like us on
