The volunteer will help refugee students in the Salt Lake City area navigate their school work by providing basic academic support for youth in grades 6-12. Volunteers will be matched with a family with school-aged children who need help with homework, online classwork, or their ESL skills, and are asked to meet weekly for one hour with the student/family. Tutors support each student with homework/assignments spanning academic subjects/disciplines and English language development skills.

We ask that all tutors commit to a minimum of 3 months of service, meeting once a week for a minimum of one hour per week.

About International Rescue Committee

Location:

221 South 400 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84101, US

Mission Statement

The International Rescue Committee serves refugees and communities victimized by oppression or violent conflict worldwide. Founded in 1933, the IRC is committed to freedom, human dignity, and self-reliance. This commitment is expressed in emergency relief, protection of human rights, post-conflict development, resettlement assistance, and advocacy.

Description

Each year, thousands of refugees are invited by the U.S. government to seek safety and freedom. Forced to flee conflict or persecution, many refugees have survived against incredible odds. Refugees step off the plane with next to nothing but their dignity, hope, and determination. In Salt Lake City, the IRC helps approximately 500 refugees each year to rebuild their lives.
