Our Mission
Make-A-Wish's mission is to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illness. Our chapter directly serves the children and families residing in San Diego and Imperial counties. Each year, we grant approximately 200 wishes for children experiencing critical illnesses in our community.
Role Overview
In teams of two, Wish Granters meet with a wish child and their family to help determine the child's heartfelt wish. After the child determines their wish, Wish Granters act as a liaison between the family and our staff to help communicate wish details and also keep the magic alive for the wish kid with creative enhancements throughout the wish process. All volunteers are asked to commit an average 20-25 hours over a span of nine to twelve months to see one wish from start to finish. After that, we ask that Wish Granters take on at least two wishes per year.
Wish Discovery Visit and any subsequent visits may take place at the wish family's home, at our office in Kearny Mesa, or at a neutral location such as a park, local library, or local restaurant. Typically, visits are scheduled on evenings or weekends based on availability of the volunteers and wish family.
Join the Volunteer Team
We are currently seeking bilingual volunteers to join our wish granting team so that we can best serve our wish families. Volunteers must be a minimum of 21 years of age and willing to complete a background check. Volunteers must complete an in-depth training on Saturday, August 24th in order to become a Wish Granter (training will be held in-person in Central San Diego).
If you have passion for helping children and a drive to give back to the community, this would be a great volunteer opportunity for you!
