QUICK OVERVIEW

Use your passion for exercise and your friendly personality to support people on their journey to long-term sobriety. As a Strides in Recovery assistant coach, you will walk, jog or run with small groups of the newly sober who are receiving treatment in a local addiction recovery program, helping them grow physically, mentally, and emotionally stronger.

IMPACT

You know how good regular exercise makes you feel. Help those battling addiction experience these same physical, emotional, and mental health benefits. Empower them to do their best at the hard work of recovery. Exercise, and especially exercise done toward a goal and with a team, has been clinically proven to promote the mindset and reinforce the life skills needed to stay sober. Together, we will support recovery. Together, we will change lives.

VOLUNTEER ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Walk/Jog/Run the 3-4 mile route with clients in a local addiction treatment program. Engage in supportive conversation. Encourage them to use walking/running as a way to grow physically, mentally, and emotionally stronger so they can do their best at the hard work of recovery. We request that volunteers take this commitment seriously. Please show up consistently in order to build connections with the team members and be positive role models of life in sobriety.

REQUIREMENTS

You do NOT need to be a serious runner. You do need to be capable of walking/jogging several miles while being a good listener and engaging in supportive conversation.

Mission Statement

Description

Use your passion for exercise and your friendly personality to support people on their journey to long-term sobriety. As a Strides in Recovery assistant coach / mentor, you will walk, jog or run with small groups of the newly sober who are receiving treatment at an addiction recovery program. You do NOT need to be a serious runner. You do need to be capable of walking/jogging several miles while being a good listener and engaging in supportive conversation.

Exercise, and especially exercise done toward a goal and with a team, has been clinically proven to promote the mindset needed to stay sober and reduce the risk of relapse. Training for this role will include an overview of the causes and treatment for addiction, with an emphasis on the physical, emotional, and mental health benefits of exercise in early recovery.

The first-year post-addiction treatment relapse rate is 40-60%, and since the pandemic, the number of overdose deaths has been climbing. You will be part of bringing those numbers down! Together, we will support recovery. Together, we will change lives.
