About:

The Whitacre College of Engineering STEM Outreach Program is looking for volunteers to serve as head referees for one of our FIRST Tech Challenge robotics leagues.

In FIRST Tech Challenge, teams of middle school and high school students are tasked to design, build, program, and market a robot that competes in a robot game that changes every year. Each year, FIRST embarks on a new season theme that brings in new challenges for students to solve. These FIRST Tech Challenge teams will compete in league meets to score points in a robot game that accumulates to the league tournament. Those who advance from their league tournament will get to compete at the West Texas Area Championship on February 22nd at Lubbock-Cooper Liberty High School.

This need in particular is for the Lubbock-B league, where teams from Frenship, Lubbock-Cooper, Muleshoe, Denver City, etc.

About Volunteering With FIRST:

FIRST is a leading non-profit organization that aims to provide hands-on STEM activities and competitions for students K-12. FIRST is 90% supported by volunteers who are passionate about supporting students and STEM!

Volunteering is a great way to get involved in the STEM community and help provide an impact that students will remember forever! We can provide certificates and/or sign off of any hours upon request for those who help out at our events. When you apply for this need, you will receive an email with instructions on how to sign-up with FIRST as a volunteer and resources to help you get started.

About Volunteer Role:

Head Referees are key volunteers that help oversee the other referees during robot matches. They ensure that all robot and game rules are being met and that no egregious behavior is being conducted on the competition field. They may also answer game related questions from the teams and have final say on game rulings.

Robot/engineering experience and qualifications are NOT required in order to be a head referee. In fact, we encourage those from a variety of backgrounds and skill sets to apply! Training is provided to help volunteers learn the game and how to be a referee at competitions.

We are looking for head referees who would be willing to support all the events in Lubbock-B as a consistent volunteer base has proven to provide a more comfortable and efficient event experience for both teams and volunteers alike.

All events will be at Frenship High School on the following dates:

Scrimmage: 10/19/2024

League Meet #1: 11/02/2024

League Meet #2: 12/14/2024

League Meet #3: 1/18/2025

League Tournament: 2/08/2025

League Meets, 7:30 AM - 2:30 PM, League Tournament 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Note, the hours required that is listed on this page is a rough estimate based on experience but head referees can put in as much as they want into the program. Some of the hours are based on going through the trainings. The reason we are recruiting early is so volunteers have plenty of time to sign-up, go through the required trainings, and have a comfortable experience being apart of our volunteer community!

Questions about FIRST, FIRST Tech Challenge, and volunteering can be sent to Garrett Smith at garrett.smith@ttu.edu or (806) 834-5828
