Literacy Network recently installed two new perennial gardens! We are recruiting two Volunteer Gardeners to nurture and maintain the newly planted (Spring 2024) perennial borders.

  • A Sun Gardener to care for our west-facing garden along Park Street
  • A Shade Gardener to care for the north-facing garden in front of our building

Nurture, tidy, and tend to your Literacy Network garden throughout the growing season (April - October). This includes but is not limited to:

  • Weeding
  • Deadheading and deadleafing perennials as needed

  • Mulching as needed
  • Making design updates and adjustments in collaboration with the Associate Director
  • Collaborating with the Volunteer Tree & Shrub Gardener as needed
  • Performing spring and fall clean-up tasks (cutting back, raking, etc.), balancing tidiness with best practices for wildlife and winter interest

Volunteer Requirements:

About Literacy Network

Location:

701 Dane St, Madison, WI 53713, US

Mission Statement

Literacy Network helps adults in Dane County build skills, reach goals, and connect communities.

Description

Literacy Network teaches reading, writing, communication, and computer skills to Dane County adults so they can achieve financial security, well-being, and deeper engagement with their families and the community. Here in Dane County, more than 55,000 adults struggle with low literacy. Adult literacy education leads to long-term improvements in the lives of students and their families. Literacy Network helps adults:

  • improve their job situation
  • communicate better with their children's schools
  • gain their U.S. citizenship
  • obtain their high school equivalency degree
  • take the next step to college and other certifications
  • learn the basic reading, writing, and English language skills that many of us take for granted
We offer free group classes and trained volunteer tutors at locations throughout the Madison area. Programs operate on a three semester schedule: spring, summer, and fall, and we recruit interns and tutors every semester. New volunteers receive position-specific training, in-service opportunities, and dedicated staff support.
