We seek someone with a passion for trees to help Restore Mass Ave (RMA) fulfill its goals: - to grow a full canopy of major trees along Embassy Row, - to engage local owners as stewards of these trees, and - to increase our impact beyond the success achieved so far. The job is an opportunity to create tangible results in "greening" a famous part of DC.

Internally she/he will track project assignments, support monthly Board meetings, and help with RMA’s finances. Externally she/he can be RMA’s outreach person with some agreed contacts along Mass Ave in the private sector, government, and nonprofits.

Note: She/he will work with the President, a lead Board member or an outside expert on the tasks below. We can tailor assignments based on the candidate's experience and preferences.

Tasks

Internal:

  • Schedule and circulate materials for monthly Board meetings; attend virtually or in person; take brief minutes and circulate.
  • Manage calendar of projects, tasks and deadlines. Follow up as needed.
  • Support donor engagement by coordinating year-end fundraising drive and assisting with RMA events.
  • Assist with project accounting compatible with IRS and grantors.
  • Research grants and assist with applications & reporting.

External:

  • Assist RMA messaging (emails, brief notes) with embassies and others along the route; schedule follow-up by President, Board members or others.
  • Schedule RMA participation in external meetings such as with the city forestry agency, local ANCs, and the National Park Service.
  • Represent RMA externally as desired and agreed. The EA may build relationships with embassies of special interest, forestry professionals and local government.
  • Organize occasional small events such as tree tours and Treekeeping workshops at which embassy staff and neighbors learn tree care; participate in these as desired and agreed.

Requirements

  • Experience in non-profit administrative support
  • Good at meeting summaries, spreadsheets, follow-up
  • Experience in financial program tracking
  • Able to work independently and consistently
  • Clear writer and communicator
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor
  • Have own computer

Preferred

  • Professional experience and/or a degree in urban forestry, landscape architecture, green engineering, historic preservation
  • Track record managing grants and finance for small non-profits
  • Digital engagement skills with social media; able to assist with website content

Expected Time Commitment

Four hours per week, including monthly Board meetings, which are on the second Tuesday 5:30 - 6:45 pm, Zoom and in-person. Additional hours as needed and agreed.

Location

The Executive Assistant should be able to visit Embassy Row part of Mass Ave easily, to be familiar with trees and landscape and see how the various stakeholders are involved. She/he should be able to attend meetings at RMA headquarters at 2500 Massachusetts Avenue when in-person sessions are preferred to Zoom.

Restore Mass Ave works to re-grow the canopy of major trees that made the part of Massachusetts Avenue, NW, now known as Embassy Row, a world attraction a century ago. We arrange for the planting of new trees, replacement of dying trees, and care for all new and vulnerable trees. We promote the restoration of historic landscape. "Re-greening" one of America's last Grand Avenues, reduces pollution of water and air, and brings energy efficiency to the historic Beaux Arts mansions, which include international missions, on this national landmark. We aspire to be a model community effort for urban forest renewal in historic cultural landscapes.

Description

Community tree planting, tree watering and care, partnering with city forestry, transportation and historic preservation agencies, international outreach to embassies of Africa, Asia and Europe. Promoting energy efficiency by old growth forest preservation. Promoting historic architecture and landscape. E newsletter, events planning, speaking and testimony on urban forest policy. Many fun group activities.
