Are you 50+, love reading and want to make a difference in the life of a child?
Join our AARP Experience Corps Intergenerational Team and help kids at HOGAN CEDARS ELEMENTARY become great readers!

Volunteers work one on one with elementary school students in the afterschool program, helping them become practice reading and instilling in them the love of learning.

No experience is needed - just a desire to make a difference, and a love of children! We provide dynamic and interactive training, and full support.

AARP Experience Corps, a program of Metropolitan Family Service, is an innovative, award-winning national service program that connects older adult tutors and mentors to students in public schools throughout the Portland Metro Area.

Metropolitan Family Service helps people move beyond the limitations of poverty, inequity and social isolation.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to help people gain prosperity, promote equity, and build a connected community for all ages. MFS connects with children, families, and older adults from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds, reaching more than 24,000 people each year in Portland, Oregon's tri-county area. We work to empower individuals at every stage of life by ensuring childhood and youth success, fostering economic well-being, promoting community health and wellness, and addressing our environment in innovative ways. MFS is dedicated to building stronger communities by providing services, connecting people with resources, and offering meaningful and rewarding volunteer opportunities.

Description

Since 1950, our nonprofit has grown from family counseling in the early days, to a broad-based multi-service organization within our culturally diverse, intergenerational community today.

We embrace innovation to create sustainable solutions that address disparities, promote equity, and demonstrate respect for all individuals.

As an anti-racist and culturally responsive organization, we understand acknowledging disparities is not enough. We partner with community members who choose to partner with us to access services they see as helpful to them.

At our organization, we tackle complex challenges by actively listening and engaging with diverse perspectives to understand and meet the needs of the community. In all that we do, we honor the inherent strength of intergenerational, multicultural communities.

Metropolitan Family Service (MFS) volunteers serve in various capacities, depending on their interests and abilities.
