The Disaster Health Services Associate provides healthcare and first-aid for clients, and in some cases, staff. Additionally, this role assesses for and responds to public health issues in Red Cross service delivery sites.

Responsibilities:
*Assess and triage the health needs of the shelter population - at the time of registration and on an on-going basis.
*Evaluate and treat client's illnesses and/or injuries per past history utilizing the ARC Health
*Services Protocols as a guideline.
*Immediately refer critical illness or injury to a higher level of care - i.e. Emergency Medical System (EMS).
*Document appropriately in accordance with HIPAA guidelines to ensure client confidentiality.
*Monitor shelter clients and staff for disease outbreaks and report to public health through Health Services Supervisor.
*Consider if current housing or shelter is appropriate for client's required level of care.
*Make appropriate community referrals.
*Refer individuals with mental or emotional health issues to Disaster Mental Health workers.
*Ensure ongoing sanitary conditions of restrooms, food service, and healthcare areas. Ensure the security of all medical supplies and equipment.
*Inform the facility manager of any safety hazards or sanitation problems.
*Arrange for replacement of emergency medication for disaster-related health needs of shelter residents in accordance with ARC regulations & policies.

Time Commitment: Flexible. Works with the Disaster Action Team (DAT) participating in an on-call system.

Qualifications:
*Attendance in volunteer orientation and completion of all required forms (volunteer and DSHR* applications) and clear background check.
*Disaster and Client Services volunteers to register in the ARC Disaster Services Human Resource system to track all trained disaster services volunteers.
*Must be a Healthcare Professional with an unencumbered license or certification from an issuing authority in one of the following disciplines:
-Physician (MD / DO)
-Registered Nurse (RN)
-Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
-Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT-B)
-Paramedics (EMT-P)
-Physician Assistants (PA)
-Allied Health Workers (Case by Case Basis)
*Must be certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Basic First Aid by either the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Note: Red Cross CPR and First Aid classes are free for volunteers
