CS Mentor

Become a mentor for middle school neurodivergent students and empower them for future careers!

How do mentors make an impact?

Volunteer Mentors serve in the classroom to support a new hands-on approach to teaching and learning-one that helps neurodivergent students develop the skills, mindsets, and networks to thrive in the 21st-century economy.

They build trusting relationships with students that are critical for their learning and growth, and in turn our students thrive while working with mentors that look like them, seeing themselves in the potential of various career paths.

Volunteer Mentors are intentionally matched with classrooms according to their skill sets, career experiences, and the students’ needs.

What will you do?

  • Work with a classroom of neurodivergent students to complete an experience-based learning project.
  • Provide insight into future careers by connecting project skills to learnings from your career and educational background.
  • Support students' presentation skills, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving, and provide feedback on students' work.
  • Adapt teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of neurodivergent students.
  • Promote a positive and inclusive learning environment that respects and values neurodiversity.
  • Collaborate closely with Citizen Schools staff and teachers to mentor students along this hands-on learning journey.

What is the commitment and training like?

  • Commit to attending (4-8) hour-long classroom sessions between September and December
  • Commit to attending a Volunteer Orientation and recommended volunteer learning events.

Citizen Schools is a national nonprofit organization, that promotes transformative, experience-based learning opportunities for students from under-resourced communities. Our work mobilizes passionate and diverse volunteers to invest their time, expertise, and creativity in assisting students to tangibly realize their learning and career goals. Their impact ignites our students’ curiosity, builds their confidence, and helps them develop into the next generation of leaders.
