Arlington Historical Society is an all-volunteer, 501(c)3 organization dedicated to preserving the history of Arlington County, VA (ArlingtonHistoricalSociety.org). We maintain a 6000+ artifact collection, the Arlington Historical Museum, and the oldest house in Arlington County, the Ball-Sellers House.

We are looking for a passionate, motivated Museum Director to replace our retiring director and guide the Arlington Historical Museum through the redevelopment of our permanent exhibition. You will work with a committed group of community historians to make the Museum a welcoming, inclusive space that documents the breadth of Arlington's history and stories of all Arlingtonians.

On a regular basis the Museum Director:

  • Oversees redesign of permanent exhibits in conjunction with existing Museum Committee (this is a short-term project currently in progress)

  • Oversees development of temporary exhibits in conjunction with community organizations and Museum Committee

  • Prepares Museum budget

  • Coordinates with other Museum managers (Collections, Facilities, Docent, and Consulting Historian) and Ball-Sellers House Director

  • Supports Fundraising Committee in writing museum-related grant proposals and grant management

  • Promotes the Museum, performs outreach to the community, and serves as the public face of the Museum

  • Leads Museum Committee and serves on Collections Committee

  • Serves as ex officio Arlington Historical Society Board member, currently meeting on the 4th Tuesday of each month, 7pm

  • Commit to 10 or more hours per week of work in support of these efforts. Some weekday and weekend availability required.

Desired experience:

  • Knowledge of professional museum best practices and standards.

  • Understanding of effective museum interpretation and label writing.

  • Familiarity with museum display, such as mount making, and exhibition techniques and standards

  • Familiarity with collections management databases (we use PastPerfect), MS Office suite, and Adobe Acrobat

  • Experience with fundraising and/or grant writing

  • Ability to support the vision for the museum as a space that represents all of Arlington’s residents, past and present

  • Ability to lead volunteers and interns of diverse backgrounds and skill sets

  • Ability to set and meet deadlines, manage projects, and self-motivate

  • Experience creating and managing budgets

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written and oral communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with fellow volunteers and the general public

The Arlington Historical Society (Arlington, VA), founded in 1956, is an all-volunteer, 501(C)3 non-profit organization. We promote Arlington history through monthly public programs, community outreach, and social media. We have two museums: the Ball-Sellers House (the oldest building in the county) and the Arlington Historical Museum (at the Hume School, the oldest school house in Arlington County).
