Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Volunteers and staff represent the best interest of thousands of abused and neglected children in Lake County, IN. Volunteers participate in a 30 hour initial training that teaches volunteers the basics of child advocacy and prepares them for their casework as a child advocate. Volunteers visit children in homes, at school, and in placement to gather information about the child’s well-being, family and services. Based on the information gathered, CASA Volunteers then make recommendations that are in the best interest of the child. These recommendations assist the judges in making their rulings.
Nationally, children who have a CASA perform better in School, are less likely to spend time in long-term foster care, and are less likely to re-enter the child welfare system. CASA Volunteers make long-term and lasting impacts on the lives of children by making sure that legal and social service agencies respond to the child’s needs. Being a CASA Volunteer can make a powerful impact on a child’s life.
