More than 150,000 adults in Northern Virginia have limited English proficiency. With a large network of volunteers who serve as teachers, class aides, and tutors, the English Empowerment Center (EEC) teaches English to beginning-level adult learners at 16 different locations. EEC is looking for a volunteer ESL teacher to teach beginner English classes in Alexandria, Virginia (zip code: 22312) . This would be a perfect fit for someone who demonstrates intercultural sensitivity and is passionate about making a difference in their community. Prior English teaching experience or training is preferred, though additional training, curriculum, and support will be provided.
Responsibilities:
- Design lesson plans and teach classes twice a week (2 hours per class) to adult English language learners.
- Complete administrative tasks such as record keeping (attendance, homework logs, and volunteer hours) and submit required documentation.
Qualifications:
- Ability to motivate and teach speakers of other languages (the ability to speak a foreign language is NOT required).
- Dependable, supportive, patient and flexible individual able to relate to and establish rapport with culturally and economically diverse individuals.
- Must be at least 18 years old, and a high school graduate or have completed GED. College degree preferred.
Time commitment: Available to teach from 6:30pm to 8:30pm on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in Lincolnia, Alexandria, VA. Summer classes start the week of June 17 th and end July 25 th.
