The Barnacle Historic State Park is looking to recruit people who would like to volunteer. We have wonderful volunteer opportunities here at our park for those who are looking to give back to the community. Our park is one of many natural habitats in Coconut Grove. We couldn’t preserve and maintain these important natural and cultural resources without the significant support of volunteers and the local community.
Grounds maintenance is one of the most important roles for volunteers, because you will see the beauty of this place overlooking Biscayne Bay, observe the habitat of many wild animals and bird’s native to the area, and see what the once expansive "Miami Hammock" ecology was like back in the late 1800s.

Mission Statement
Provide resource-based recreation, while preserving, interpreting and restoring natural and cultural resources.
Description
Built in 1891, The Barnacle offers a glimpse of frontier life during the Era of the Bay, when all travel to and from Miami was by sea. Situated on the shore of Biscayne Bay, this was the home of Ralph Middleton Munroe, one of Coconut Grove's most charming and influential pioneers. Munroe preserved the forest on his land, cutting out only a winding buggy trail through the hammock - barely wide enough for one vehicle. As a result, the property contains many large, old trees.
