SECURITY ENGINEER
VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTION
Position OverviewAt Believe in Me, we are committed to empowering marginalized children and first-generation college students, providing them with the resources and support they need to succeed. Our mission is fueled by a network of dedicated volunteers who share our vision of creating a future where every child has the self-confidence to achieve their dreams.
We are in the process of developing a mobile and web application designed to support first-generation college students. This platform aims to provide comprehensive resources, personalized guidance, and a supportive community, helping students navigate the complexities of college preparation and success.
As a Volunteer Security Engineer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the security and integrity of our mobile and web application. You will work closely with the development team to identify potential security threats, implement best practices for application security, and conduct regular security assessments and audits. Your expertise will help us create a safe and secure environment for our users, protecting their data and privacy.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct regular security assessments and vulnerability testing of both the mobile and web application to identify potential risks.
- Collaborate with the app development team to integrate security measures and best practices into the development lifecycle.
- Develop and implement security protocols and measures to protect against unauthorized access, data breaches, and other cyber threats.
- Monitor security systems and logs for suspicious activity, investigating and responding to security incidents promptly.
- Stay updated on the latest security trends, threats, and technologies, recommending enhancements to the application's security posture.
- Educate the project team and volunteers on security awareness and best practices.
- Experience & Education: Proven experience in data science, statistics, computer science, or a related field. Formal education in a relevant discipline is preferred but not mandatory.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in data analysis and statistical software (e.g., Python, R, SQL) and familiarity with machine learning frameworks and libraries.
- Data Visualization: Strong skills in data visualization tools and techniques to effectively communicate insights.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to tackle complex problems with a strategic and analytical approach, turning data into actionable insights.
- Communication: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex data into clear and compelling narratives for non-technical audiences.
- Commitment: Willingness to volunteer 2-3 hours per week and engage with a team of passionate volunteers remotely.
- Proven experience in application security or a related field, with a strong understanding of security protocols, cryptography, and vulnerability management.
- Familiarity with security assessment tools and methodologies, including penetration testing and security auditing.
- Knowledge of web and mobile application development and the associated security risks and mitigation strategies.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and act swiftly in response to security incidents.
- Strong communication skills, capable of working collaboratively with a remote, volunteer-based team.
- A passion for cybersecurity and a commitment to using your skills to make a positive impact in the community.
This is a remote volunteering position with flexible hours to accommodate volunteers from various time zones.
