Join us for some fun, hands-on ecological restoration work at a scenic stretch of Schoharie Creek, steps from downtown Prattsville, New York.

The Streambank project, initiated by Hudson-based Toolshed Exchange tool lending library and supported by FICTILIS's Catskills Community Restoration initiative, supports critical riparian ecosystems by removing itadori (aka "Japanese knotweed") and planting varieties of the Salix genus (willow), while exploring experimental uses of both plants through a network of designers, craftspersons, artisans, and producers. We aim to show that long-term, non-chemical knotweed management can become self-sustaining and scalable through innovative uses of plant biomass in local circular economies, while restoring riparian buffers, sequestering carbon, and helping communities become more resilient.

All volunteers will learn about local ecology and best practices for Japanese knotweed management, and will receive discounts on any future products made from removed knotweed or cultivated willow.

About FICTILIS

Location:

490 Begley Rd, Windham, NY 12496, US

Mission Statement

FICTILIS, a fiscally sponsored project of the nonprofit Fractured Atlas, is an artist-run collaborative whose mission is to create and share work that is aesthetically, conceptually, socially, and technologically engaging.

Description

FICTILIS produces public, curated exhibitions and participatory projects, and run an artist-in-residence program. Our work is research-based and transdisciplinary, sharing ongoing interests in language, ecology and waste, monuments and public memory, and political economy. We have initiated many independent curatorial and multimedia projects as well as partnerships with museums, galleries, publishers, foundations, cities and municipalities, and academic institutions, in collaboration with artists, designers, architects, educators, historians, and practitioners in diverse fields. The word "FICTILIS" is Latin for "capable of being shaped or changed; earthen". This definition refers both to the form of our practice and to the role it is intended to play within our broader culture.

Our residency program, DEURENDIS, is located in the Catskill Mountains in Upstate New York. We support curated residencies, collaborative gatherings, and projects grounded in land stewardship, offering space for alternative and experimental practices that may struggle to find space elsewhere
