People know best what they need and should be involved in decisions that affect their lives. If you have ever wondered why the struggle is so real or questioned why the help you get sometimes makes life harder, this Council may be for you.

Our Community Accountability Council (CAC) provides input to help us understand and incorporate the real-life experiences of people who come to us for services to help shape Solid Ground policies and programs. The CAC is made up of Solid Ground community members committed to leading change - people who understand that what’s happening in their lives is also happening to other people. CAC members participate in leadership development, advocacy, and social justice training to engage decision makers. Together, we explore the root causes of poverty and ways to address them to promote community-driven solutions to issues affecting people experiencing poverty in the Seattle/King County area.

The CAC is looking for a few good folks to fill up our ranks. Requirements for membership, like hours of work needed, are few:

  • Be 18 or older
  • Ability to work with staff, volunteers, and participants with a variety of racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, lifestyles, and sexual orientations
  • Lived experience with poverty and/or other oppressions

What we ask in return:

  • Attend monthly 2-hour meetings (currently 3rd Thursdays of each month).
  • Commit to support Solid Ground’s work to end poverty and undo oppressions that keep people trapped in poverty for at least one year.
  • Actively voice your opinions and share your experiences with the group.
  • Be open to doing some reading, research, or collaboratino outside of the monthly meetings.

BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color), and people with the lived experience of poverty, racism, sexism, trans- and homophobia - everything the American system can put in our paths - are strongly encouraged to volunteer.

About Solid Ground

Mission Statement

Our mission... Solid Ground works to end poverty and undo racism and other oppressions that are root causes of poverty. Our vision... Solid Ground believes our community can move beyond poverty and oppression to a place where all people have access to quality housing, nutritious food, equal justice and opportunities to thrive. Our values... Solid Ground is committed to working with compassion, integrity, accountability, creativity and an anti-oppression approach to end homelessness, hunger, inequality and other barriers to social justice. We value collaboration and leadership from the communities we serve.

Description

Our history...

Solid Ground was founded in 1974 by community leaders and concerned citizens of one of Seattle's then most economically devastated neighborhoods, Fremont. Originally called the Fremont Public Association, our services - emergency food bank, clothing bank, and employment program - reflected the desperate needs and determined response of a mobilized and committed neighborhood.

Solid Ground today...

As the scope and severity of homelessness and poverty have increased over the years, so too have our reach to our greater community and our range of services. Now based in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood, our 30 programs and services help more than 60,000 households each year overcome poverty and build better futures throughout King County and beyond.
