Community Cats Transport Support

Time Commitment: 5 hours/month

Purpose of Position:
Two common barriers to access spay/neuter for pet owners in underserved communities are lack of transportation and high cost. We bridge that gap by providing transportation and free spay/neuter packages to and from the Veterinary Wellness Center (VWC). A volunteer paired up with a Community Programs staff member will pick up cats and dogs from Humboldt Park clients’ homes and transport them to and from the VWC to receive a spay/neuter package.

Morning Responsibilities:

  • Safely drive the transport van to and from the Veterinary Wellness Center (VWC)
  • Assist with unloading of all cats and dogs in the VWC kennels
  • Counsel clients with any questions or concerns they may have about the surgery
  • Assist with passenger duties as needed: call clients when on their way
  • Clean out and sanitize carriers and the van

Evening Responsibilities:

  • Safely drive the transport van to and from the VWC
  • Assist with loading cats and dogs in the transport van, post- surgery
  • Assist with dropping off cats and dogs from surgery to their homes
  • Counsel clients on VWC surgery paperwork and address questions
  • Assist with passenger duties as needed: call clients
  • Clean out and sanitize the van

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, hike, walk, kneel and lift
  • Must be able to lift at least 30 pounds at a time
  • Cat/dog-handling experience is a plus
  • Spanish-speaking preferred
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions

Training Volunteer Will Receive:

  • Dog handling training
  • Spay/Neuter overview training
  • Community Engagement Orientation

1 Shift

  • 07:00 AM to 06:00 PM CST
    Volunteers serve up to 5 hours monthly.
