New York City’s Church of the Transfiguration, located at 1 East 29th Street, is a national landmark with a fascinating history a century and a half in the making. Known as "The Little Church Around the Corner," the original mission of the parish was to build a church that would serve the poor and marginalized of NYC, welcoming all to be baptized, confirmed, and married, regardless of race, class, or background. As a result, this "little church," which claims to have performed the most marriages in NYC, has collected tens of thousands of records.
Since 2022, we have been on a collaborative mission to digitize and provide access to this substantial set of records, including church registers and marriage licenses, and are now seeking volunteers to help us index. With an index, we will be able to create a searchable database for the project, providing straightforward access to records of significance for the many researchers with ancestors baptized or married in New York City.
Indexing work will entail reviewing the church's internal marriage license forms and copying key names, dates, and places into a spreadsheet. This work will be done fully remotely, giving you the flexibility to contribute at your own convenience.
If you are interested in helping build this unique index, please email volunteer@nygbs.org.
We look forward to working with you to help make these indispensable records widely available.1 More opportunity with NEW YORK GENEALOGICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY
