Role Description:
As a Support Group Facilitator volunteer at HopeSpring Cancer Support Centre, you will play a vital role in providing emotional and psychological support to individuals and families affected by cancer. Your primary responsibility will be to facilitate support group sessions, creating a safe and welcoming environment where participants can share their experiences, express their feelings, and find comfort in connecting with others facing similar challenges.
Key Responsibilities:
Facilitate Support Group Sessions:
- Lead support group meetings according to the established schedule.
- Utilize your firsthand understanding of the cancer journey to empathize with participants and guide discussions effectively.
- Foster an atmosphere of empathy, respect, and confidentiality within the group.
- Encourage open and constructive communication among group members.
- Ensure all participants have an opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings.
Provide Emotional Support:
- Offer insights and perspectives based on your own experience with cancer, demonstrating empathy and understanding.
- Validate participants' experiences and emotions while offering reassurance and support.
- Share coping strategies and techniques that have been helpful to you during your cancer journey.
- Help participants explore their feelings and fears in a supportive and non-judgmental environment.
Offer Information and Resources:
- Draw upon your knowledge of available resources and services to provide valuable information and referrals to participants.
- Share personal insights into navigating the healthcare system, managing treatment side effects, and accessing support services.
- Connect participants with relevant educational materials, workshops, and community resources.
