Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site and John F. Kennedy National Historic Site seek enthusiastic and passionate volunteers to join our Landscape and Grounds team!
Volunteers are required to attend safety meetings before the start of each session. Close toed shoes are required. Long pants and shirts are recommended. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own equipment and PPE (personal protective equipment).
Proper PPE includes: gloves, hat, ear protection, eye protection, sturdy work shoes/boots. Some PPE will be available to volunteers to use, all NPS property must remain on site.
Note: The NPS will not be responsible for lost or stolen personal items.
Work to include:
- Planting annuals and perennials
- Removing dead and decaying matter from woody plant species
- Basic grounds work: light excavation, mulching, spreading seed, pruning trees and shrubs, cutting lawn, tilling soil, making soil amendments, lawn edging, watering, weeding, debris removal, raking pathways, fertilizing lawns and shrubs
- Documenting invasive species and changes to the landscape
- Resetting borders for garden trails
- Training provided as required
- Other tasks as necessary
Tools to be used by volunteers: Shovels, hoes, pruners, loppers, manual aerators, hand tillers, trowels, soil knifes, hand shears, pole saws, hand saws, rakes, etc.
Supervisor will ensure the proper use of tools. Training for power and hand tools will be provided as needed.
Physical activities include:
- Lifting up to 50lbs, crouching, stooping, walking over diverse terrain, bending, reaching, and related activities
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The applicant will be responsible for transportation to and from the site. This is an unpaid position; housing is not provided.
