Growth and Development Services, Inc. (GDS), is a nonprofit organization founded in 1996 by Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Gary Altheim. GDS was created to provide essential mental health, leadership development, and intergeneral programs to youth and seniors challenged by social, emotional, behavioral, and educational issues who reside in under-resourced neighborhoods in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx.

Position Summary:

GDS is seeking a passionate and professional volunteer to join our team and assist us at our Leaders for Change summer program. The volunteer will work with a group leader and youth participants on a Project-Based Learning project, Summer Youth Employment Program group for the summer. The volunteer must have a strong interest in mental health, youth, leadership development, community, and social justice. The applicant will work and be supervised by experienced teachers/educators and a Clinical Psychologist.

Growth and Development Services (GDS) Leaders for Change SYEP Summer Program will be in partnership and located at Madison Square Boys and Girls Club, located in Harlem at 250 Bradhurst Avenue, New York, NY 10039

The exact dates are TBD

Training dates start at the beginning of June, once a week.

Program Dates, Beginning of July to Mid August, 24 hours/per week, Tuesday-Thursday, 9am-6 pm, but hours are flexible if needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Receive virtual training as a counselor/youth worker
  • Co-lead group of fifteen (14-15-year-olds) inner-city teens in activities, leadership development, career/job readiness
  • Help plan and co-lead therapeutic, educational, and recreational activities during group activities
  • Empower the participants to solve their own problems and advocate for themselves related to their community needs
  • Assist with daily attendance and note-taking
  • Evaluate anecdotal, empirical, and psychological program outcome tools
  • Help develop and administer program outcome tools
