Visitor Center Operations Assistant: Beaufort Firehouse

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

This position functions within the Division of Interpretation at Reconstruction Era National Historical Park’s Beaufort Firehouse contact station downtown Beaufort. The work involves accurately providing information on park resources (historical and current), directions (driving maps and local tourist attractions), and special park programs (Jr. Ranger and Ranger led activities). The volunteer will provide and assist in presenting interpretive programs at Reconstruction Era National Historical Park while representing the park.

Major Duties

Greeting Visitors

  • Greet visitors with a cheerful manner as they near the building or parking lot.
  • Assist on-duty ranger with daily visitor stats reporting.
  • Restock and handout information including: Jr. Ranger program, park uni-grids, maps, pop-up program materials.
  • Assist visitors by giving directions and answering questions about the park and surrounding areas.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technology problems with the wireless network and video display.
  • Ability to operate a cash and credit-based sales register, as well as assisting the on-duty ranger and bookstore representative with inventory checks/deliveries and display maintenance.
  • Assist staff by providing short interpretive talks or orientation overviews relating to the site’s Reconstruction topics including the Beaufort historic district, the Civil War, and the Gullah Geechee community.
  • Promote walking tours and other ranger led programs.
  • Assist NPS staff with interpretative projects, special events, or programs that take place at this location or within historic downtown Beaufort.

Building and Program Upkeep

  • Assist with daily maintenance of the building, including the minimal cleaning: emptying trash, restocking bathroom, sweeping floors, watering indoor plants, dusting exhibits, and use of vacuum and leaf blower with proper PPE and training.
  • Assist in setting up and storing tents, tables, and chairs for small events.
  • Assist in minor assembly of interp equipment including exhibits, multimedia and minor office needs.
