This position functions within the Division of Interpretation and Cultural Resource Management at Reconstruction Era National Historical Park. The work involves reference and information services for park staff and visitors, including library operations and clerical support. The volunteer will provide the work necessary to support the library program at Reconstruction Era National Historical Park.
Major Duties
Reference and Public Service
- Assists visitors with their use of public access computers for tasks such as Internet searches, E-mail, and downloading digital cameras to other storage devices.
- Responds to outside researchers for information requests in person, by phone, and by email. Searches the Internet and online databases to locate and select relevant information to answer research requests for park staff.
Library Operations
- Keeps library statistics on staff and other volunteer use.
- Performs shelving and filing of returned library materials.
- Periodically inventories sections of the collection or the collections of the branch libraries using shelf lists, recommending books for removal from library, reshelving books found out of order, and annotating any missing items for the attention of supervisor.
- Processes newly cataloged materials - adding spine and pocket labels, covering book jackets, and binding reports.
- Manages the library circulation system. Updates and maintains circulation records.
- Maintains all periodicals by keeping current records of issues received, arranging periodicals on the shelf, moving older periodicals to storage, and updating holdings.
- Completes housekeeping activities including dusting and sweeping library entry area.
Clerical Support
- Performs a variety of clerical operations in support of the library. This may include tasks such as creating spreadsheets to track library statistics, word processing reports, taking action on incoming correspondence, inventorying and ordering library supplies, and managing library equipment.
