We help Metro Detroit students figure out what they'll do after high school, teach them life and job skills needed for success, and provide guidance and support as they pursue their goals. Career mentors are volunteers from the business community who attend sessions with students and coach them through the program, providing positive support and encouragement. One-hour sessions are held at a participating school, during regular school hours, and in a classroom with staff, teachers, students, and other career mentors present. Each session starts with a staff member who teaches a 10 to 15-minute lesson. Then career mentors participate with students in a fun and structured activity that reinforces the lesson. Topics include career exploration, strengths and weaknesses identification and analysis, emotional intelligence, perseverance, academic and career planning, and goal setting. Sessions are held two or three times a month from November through May. Career mentors receive training before the program year starts and support before and during every session. Participating schools are in Detroit, Harper Woods, Warren, Sterling Heights, and Pontiac. Get more information or apply online at WinningFutures.org.
