The Anna Maria Island Historical Museum is a one of a kind museum showcasing the unique history of all three island cities on Anna Maria Island. Rich in history and unique in it's past, the museum complex houses the Museum, Old City Jail, Belle Haven Cottage and Historical Park and Mangrove Walk. Our museum is free to the public but we cannot remain free or be open unless we have volunteer docents willing to man the museum. We invite you to consider becoming a docent. No experience is necessary. We have a fun and engaging training resources like wonderful books and audio links. You will not only learn about the island's history but you will meet people from all over the world and have interesting conversations with residents, visitors and locals.
You can volunteer as little as 3 hours a month or as much as you want. The schedules are flexible so don't worry about being locked into a regular schedule. Before you commit, come give it a try and shadow one of our docents for an afternoon! We think you will love it. We look forward to meeting you!

Description
Now that you have fallen in love with Anna Maria Island, come learn about its rich history. The Anna Maria Island Historical Society was founded in 1990 by Pat Copeland and Carolyne Norwood to preserve the Island's unique story. The Historical Society opened the museum in 1992 and continues to manage it today.
A visit to the Anna Maria Island Historical Society Museum is a trip back into old Florida. Our museum displays artifacts, photographs and maps that show the Island's history as it spans from its earliest times as an Indian fishing camp; to the first homesteader in 1893; to the Island's roaring twenties culture; to the baseball players who once wintered here in the 1950s-70s. The historical complex features the original City Jail, the Belle Haven cottage that once sat on the City Pier, and a garden of plants native to Anna Maria Island.
We have scavenger hunts for the kids (and the kid in all of us). Find the alligator dolls, rattlesnake skin and many other unique artifacts, join in the fun!
