United Way of the National Capital Area is dedicated to improving the lives of every person in our community by removing barriers to better health, education, and economic opportunity. Regional Councils play a vital role in this work by connecting United Way NCA staff directly with the communities we serve, helping us to better understand the needs of the community

United Way NCA is seeking professional individuals from various industry sectors (business, government, technology, etc.) who desire give back to their community, enhance their leadership skills, and grow their personal and professional networks by serving on United Way NCA’s Regional Council. The Regional Councils is responsible for annually organizing a fundraising and volunteer event to provide resources for students in the community who are experiencing food insecurity. Hungry students do not do as well in school, may not be able to take part in sports and extracurricular activities or may miss school altogether due to the impact on their health.

If you have a passion for serving your community, experience or would like to gain experience in event planning and fundraising, or looking to meet new people then joining one of United Way NCA’s three regional councils in Maryland (Prince George’s County and Montgomery County), DC and Northern Virginia (Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, Fauquier, Culpepper and Rappahannock counties) could be the right fit for you.

As a member of the Regional Council, you will:

  • Attend monthly meetings held virtually and in person with your local regional council.
  • Participate in four quarterly meetings with members of all three regional councils.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of a fundraising event (for example: a walk-a-thon, pickleball tournament or a day at TopGolf) annually.
  • Participate in volunteer events which serve your community.

To ensure the council can run effectively and maximize its impact, we ask all volunteers to commit to a minimum of 12 months of service. On average, volunteers in this role spend about 2-4 hours per month planning, coordinating, and executing their local initiatives, including their full day fundraising event. We also ask for flexibility in your weekday schedule to attend the monthly, virtual planning meetings, which are typically held at a consistent time each month as determined by your Regional Council team.

If you have a passion for serving your community and you are excited about being behind-the-scenes making a quantifiable difference in the DMV, email us at philanthropy@uwnca.org with a copy of your resume, highlighting your strong communication and organizational skills, and a quick paragraph about what draws you to this role. No prior experience in fundraising or event planning is required.

We can’t wait to meet you and work together to make a difference in the National Capital Area!
