Native Plant Garden Caretaker

Duties:
- Removing and properly disposing dead plants
- Pulling weeds and non-native species from the garden
- Watering with hose and sprayer
- Basic landscaping (replenishing soil, improving water drainage, etc.) as needed
- Trimming of existing plants
- Planting new native plants
- Improving signage in the garden
- Recording any major facilities issue and reporting it to their supervisor
Length of Service:
Position will be year round with duties changing as seasons and weather permits. Volunteer will choose their own set schedule.
Lodging:
• Please note that housing is not available for this position
Tools:
- Basic gardening tools (hand shears, loppers, leaf rakes, wheelbarrows)
Location:
The Native Plant Garden behind the Whiskeytown Nat'l Recreation Area Visitor Center.
Qualifications:
- Experience caring for a garden using basic gardening tools
- Knowledge of plant species native to the Whiskeytown area or willingness to learn
- Ability to lift small loads of no more than 20 pounds on an occasional basis
Training and Development Provided:
- Familiarization with native and invasive plant species as needed
Uniform:
This position is uniformed. Supervisor will provide green VIP logo shirt.
Job Hazards:
- Slips, trips, and falls
- Adverse weather conditions (heat, sun exposure, thunderstorms, snow)
- Environmental hazards (standing snags, falling tree limbs, poison oak, wildlife/insect bites and stings, etc.)
