Do you have a passion for reading? Come and volunteer with SitStayRead as a Book Buddy!

As a Book Buddy volunteer, you will work with a small group of students on different reading and writing activities. No previous classroom or reading experience is needed! We are recruiting for our three programs, Kindergarten through 2nd Grade.

SitStayRead is a non-profit that uses an engaging curriculum to advance children's literacy skills through our trained literacy volunteers and Certified Reading Assistance Dogs. We help Kindergarten through 1st Grade students on the South and West sides of Chicago.

We have in-person opportunities for volunteers to spend 1.5 hours, at least once a week, over six consecutive weeks (the number of sessions attended is flexible), working with students and staff anytime between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. We'll also have afterschool family events and weekend opportunities in schools and Chicago Public Libraries!

So, what’s next? After you apply, our Volunteer Program Manager will reach out to you with further instructions. We really hope to see you in our classrooms!

Southside & Westside, Chicago, IL 60657, US

Mission Statement

Our mission is to advance children's literacy and builds confidence in young readers by using an engaging curriculum incorporating on social-emotional learning enriched by Certified Reading Assistance Dogs.

Description

We were founded in 2003 at Sulzer Library in Lincoln Square as a community outreach opportunity to re-engage aging therapy dogs. Shorty after, we transitioned to the classroom model, and created our own curriculum. We're Chicago's first and only literacy organizations that uses the power of the human-dog bond to advance kids' reading and writing skill. We have an emphasis on social-emotional learning built into our curriculums and the books we read, and we also support classrooms with our Bilingual (Spanish) curriculum.

In the last 20 years we’ve evolved, changed, and grown significantly. So far, we’ve supported over 25,000 students, distributed over 60,000 books, and partnered with 27 schools and community partners.
