Open Heart Kitchen believes providing food, clothing, and shelter are building blocks for dignity, respect, and stability. With access to affordable housing at an all time low in the Bay Area, Open Heart Refuge seeks to establish and environment where adults without permanent housing can find necessary support and community. The development of this community is impossible without the compassionate support of volunteers.
Join our team of volunteers by signing up for one of the following shifts:
- Check-In (5:45 PM until 9:00 PM) Help the Shelter Coordinator clean the shelter space and set up the beds for the OHR beds. Following set up, volunteers will help the coordinator with guest check-in by searching bags and serving dinner to the guests
- Dinner and Quiet Time (9:00 PM until 11:00 PM) Assist the Shelter Coordinator with wind down to quiet time by helping lock down the facility and helping guests get ready in their beds.
Our volunteer program is flexible. Once you complete the necessary paperwork, you will have access to our volunteer portal where you can sign up for shifts at your leisure. There is no minimum amount of shifts required.

Description
Open Heart Kitchen's mission is "Equitable access to nutritious food today while building a food secure tomorrow." The work we do focuses on meeting immediate needs in the Tri-Valley, while also seeking ways to eliminate systematic inequalities leading to hunger in the first place. Our current programs include Senior Meals, Community Meals, Mobile Pop Up Pantries for grocery distribution, Street Outreach, and Open Heart Refuge.
Our guests come from all walks of life; the homeless, seniors on fixed incomes, the underemployed and many low-income families struggling to make ends meet. Open Heart Kitchen is their safety net against hunger.
