Be there when it matters most: No Veteran Dies Alone

ORGANIZATION: Fargo VA Health Care System

What is No Veteran Dies Alone (NVDA)

While many of our Veterans pass away surrounded by loved ones, this isn't always the case. In the event that a Veteran has no one who is able or willing to attend them in their final hours, NVDA volunteers, also known as Compassionate Companions, provide emotional support by staying by the Veteran's side during their final moments.

How is it organized?

Veterans, staff, and family members work with a palliative care social worker at VA to determine if a NVDA volunteer is needed and appropriate. Volunteers are then given as much notice as possible to come to the VA and attend the Veteran.

What are the duties?

Provide companionship to Veterans by listening, providing reassurance, holding the Veteran’s hand, sitting quietly and providing companionship, reading to the Veteran, assisting in writing letters, playing soothing music, as they spend their last hours of life.

Who is Eligible to be a NVDA volunteer?

Anyone with a passion for Veterans and the emotional capacity to care for those who are actively dying. In order to become a volunteer, all applicants must complete the VA volunteer onboarding process.

What Commitment is Expected?

NVDA volunteers are called upon whenever the need arises. Cases in which a Veteran has no one to attend them are relatively rare, but can be as frequent as twelve times a year. When needed, a palliative care social worker will call volunteers based on their indicated eligibility.

How Will I be Trained?

Interested volunteers may contact the CDCE office at 701-239-3700 ext. 3395 to complete the appropriate paperwork. Perspective volunteers will meet with a palliative care social worker to discuss the program and complete relevant trainings to see if they are a fit for the program.
