Heartland Human Care Serivces's Program is looking for a mentor from Illinois to help refugees with her interview skills and navigating the American hiring system!

  • Our participants are adult immigrants and refugees who have been relocated to Illinois, most in the Chicago area.
  • Most participants are seeking ESL tutoring online (Skype, Zoom, WhatsApp, Viber)
  • A small number of participants want in-person tutoring at one of our sites or a library.
  • Participants' English language needs range from very beginning (ABC's, reading, writing) to more advanced learners (conversation, vocabulary building, grammar), with the focus on interview skills. We try to match students to the tutors' skills and preferences whenever possible.
  • Heartland provides volunteer tutors with 12 hours of free tutor training and 3 hours of orientation to our program. * (Which you can be exempt from if you already have qualified training)

Description

Refugee & Immigrant Community Services (RICS) partners with refugees, asylees, immigrants and survivors of trafficking to address their needs by connecting them to their new community, providing education and employment services, and the help they need to succeed in their new country. RICS annually resettles more than 150 individuals in Chicago from places like Afghanistan, Burma, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iraq, Sudan, Ukraine, and Syria. RICS serves an additional 500 refugees through a variety of services including cultural orientation, adjustment counseling, employment, job readiness and placement services, as well as medical case management, family literacy, and English language training for adults.
