Sunnybrae Elementary is a Title 1 school in the Sunnybrae neighborhood of San Mateo. While we're surrounded by high tech companies, and are located only a mile from the elite Nueva School, just half of our students are reading at grade level by the third grade. There are a number of contributing factors to this. Among them: many of our students are multilingual and are learning English as they learn to read for the first time.
Our team is looking for volunteers to be a reading buddy to our elementary (K-5) students in the mornings before the school day, when they're fresh and raring to go. Our teachers teach students phonics and the mechanics of reading, but we need additional help from volunteers to provide individual attention to encourage and guide students as they read aloud.
