What is a House Captain? A house captain oversees both skilled and unskilled volunteers in performing updates to homes including flooring, painting, drywalling, landscaping, fencing, etc. This includes prepping and finishing. It can also include some light plumping and electric. House captains will also help with the project management of contractors, scoping of projects, site assessments, and material list while doing some pre and post volunteer work as well.
Why is this needed? Rebuilding Together North Texas is a non-profit that performs critical home repairs for low income homeowners in the DFW area. Some of this work is performed by contractors and some is done by volunteers. Those volunteers are enthusiastic but may not have the skills and experience needed to work independently. The house captain manages the volunteers to achieve the stated outcomes of the project.
What is the schedule? While it can be throughout the year, our primary focus is spring and fall. Projects normally start at 8 AM and finish by 5 PM. Lunch is provided as are all tools, equipment, and supplies. We have weeks with no projects and other weeks with up to 4 project days.
What are the qualifications for House Captain? This position requires experience in managing housing related projects and leading others to short term outcomes and it requires experience in home maintenance and repairs. House Captains are expected to value the diversity our volunteers bring. They need to lead from the heart and have patience and treat all people with respect.
