Join us as a Climate Catalyst to help LMBO staff and interns in our newest initiative which aims to produce biochar from woody invasive species slash generated from various partners' habitat restoration projects.
Biochar is produced when biomass is super-heated with little oxygen in a specially designed kiln, locking in the carbon previously held within plant tissues to produce a specialized charcoal. When paired with tree planting Biochar can sequester carbon, retain and slow release water to trees, and filtrate and absorb pollutants, including nutrients. Through these properties, it is a powerful tool to promote resiliency of trees to future climate extremes, to filter pollutants (especially nutrients), to reduce air pollution from woody debris burning, and to address climate change.
Volunteers will help with gathering and preparing woody debris for kilns, assisting kiln tenders with loading, and testing methods to "charge" biochar with nutrients by soaking the char in overly nutrient-rich local waterways prior to using in planting.

Mission Statement
Our Mission and Our Vision To advance the conservation of birds in Wisconsin and throughout the Western Great Lakes Region through coordinated research, monitoring, and education. We envision a day when knowledge of birds is widespread, decisions affecting them are based on good science, and citizens care about conservation and participate in it so that common species are kept common and imperiled populations are restored.
Description
Port Washington Community Scientist & Volunteer Sign Up
We are recruiting volunteers and community scientists to help us with the Neighborhood Habitat Improvement Project, which aims to improve residential areas for birds, pollinators, and water quality. There are a variety of options for how volunteers can help, participate in science, and learn more about our native plants, birds, and pollinators at the same time!
If one of these positions seems like a good fit for you and you are ready to help us out this year, please sign up for more information.
While you do not need to live in Port Washington, all activities are in Port Washington at this time. Please let us know if you are interested in volunteering in other communities. We are actively expanding our programming in lakeshore communities and will let you know when opportunities become available.
