ORGANIZATION: Volunteers of America Chesapeake and Carolinas

Light the World Giving Machines provide a unique opportunity for our community to serve and care for those in need. Instead of buying candy or snacks for themselves, individuals and families purchase goods or services for someone in need. With each donation, a card representing a necessary item (food, clothing, healthcare, etc.) drops into a sealed display bin at the bottom of the machine. 100% of the funds donated go directly to the participating nonprofit organizations.

In our area, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has partnered with 4 local charities (EcoAction Arlington, Volunteers of America Chesapeake and Carolinas, Willing Warriors, Young Doctors Project) and 2 global charities (American Red Cross, Care USA).

Light the World Giving Machines include items chosen by participating local and global nonprofit organizations that will help them care for those they serve. These customized machines record each transaction, ensuring that the nonprofit receives the exact amount donated.

Volunteers will learn about the charities and be prepared to answer questions about the products offered in the machines. We will provide information that will prepare you to answer questions, manage traffic flow, and maintain a clean, fun, and positive space for all who come to give or merely pass by.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Be available to give out Light the World pins and take photos of donors holding a laminated picture of their donation
  • Answer questions about the initiative and the products offered
  • Capture and share uplifting stories
  • Restock machines throughout the day
  • Keep machines and surrounding areas clean
  • Assist charities by managing the activities tables

Youth over 14 are welcome to volunteer with an adult. Volunteers are welcome to invite friends and neighbors to serve as well.
