WHO are we?
A unique group of specially trained hospital volunteers that visit with hospitalized adults >65 Our patients are primarily identified by the Geriatric consult service.
WHAT do we do?
Offer therapeutic companionship, communication and socialization to vulnerable hospitalized older adults.
Offer diversion activities, reorientation & reassurance, assist with room organization, encourage mobilization, offer support with basic ADLs (wash face, brush teeth, comb hair), and help with meal ordering, food set up and feeding.
WHERE do we visit patients?
All acute and intensive care units in OHSU hospital
WHEN are our services available?
Volunteer shifts are available: 7 days a week from 9am-1pm and from 1pm - 5pm

Description
Healthcare Volunteers provides assistance in the achievement of departmental objectives by effectively utilizing volunteer resources in harmony with the institution’s goals, objectives and mission, ultimately improving the experience of patients, families, and visitors. Volunteers strive to:
- Serve patients, families, and visitors by spending quality time visiting and assisting them to promote the delivery of outstanding service.
- Assist staff in order to expedite patient treatment through non-medical services as requested, as well as to achieve greater knowledge in areas of interests leading to competent and skilled volunteers.
- Assist the unit, clinic, or assignment area to promote a safe and welcoming environment.

- The commitment for this program is 1 regularly scheduled 4 hour shift per week from 9am-1pm or from 1pm-5pm Mon-Sun for a total of 27 weeks. approximately 6 months, but you can continue beyond this commitment if you have the availability.
- Comfortable working in a hospital environment, Interest in learning and supporting elderly patients during their hospitalization, Sympathy and compassion , a desire to be there and be a listening ear. Caring and wanting to help.
